Question:
What happens if I was in a car accident and the other driver doesn’t have insurance?
Answer:
Did you know that more than 12% of Utah drivers don’t have car insurance? That means one out of every eight cars you see driving down the road doesn’t have insurance. What happens if one of those uninsured drivers hits you and turns your life upside down? In Utah car accidents, these drivers are called uninsured motorists. This is a problem I get asked about all the time.
There’s good news and bad news with an uninsured car accident. The good news is, Utah’s car insurance laws require every insurance company to offer a kind of insurance known as uninsured motorist coverage with every policy they sell. Uninsured motorist coverage is an insurance policy you buy with your insurance to protect you in case one of those uninsured drivers hurts you or a family member in a crash. That’s the good news.
The bad news is, Utah’s insurance laws don’t force you to buy that insurance. The insurance company only has to offer it to you. If you don’t want it, you can just sign it away.
I can’t tell you how many people I’ve worked with over my 25 years that got hurt by an uninsured driver, but they signed away their uninsured motorist coverage. Listen, we all want to save a buck. When we’re buying that car insurance and the agent tells us that we can save a few dollars by not buying uninsured motorist coverage, it’s so tempting. It’s even easier when you’re buying it online, just click here, save $25.
Please, please don’t turn down uninsured motorist coverage to save a few dollars. If anything, buy more uninsured motorist coverage. It’s usually really cheap insurance. When an uninsured motorist crash happens to you, it’ll make all the difference in your world to the outcome of your case, but only if you decided to buy it.
The last thing you need to know is, even if you waived your uninsured motorist coverage, there’s still hope. If you got in a Utah car accident with someone that didn’t have insurance and you’re worried about what happens next, call me for free. Let me help you figure out what we can do to help.
